This proof series is the high end expression of all the extremely popular and common changing reverse "collector series" that have been rolling out of the Mint in recent memory. The 12 coin proof Platinum Eagle type set has the following characteristics that may prove to be important in its development as it ages.
The enabling legislation gave the Mint a completely free hand in the series thematic development so consistently good designs have been the result.
Proof Platinum Eagle “quarters” are large enough to appreciate without magnification and much more affordable than the higher denomination platinum issues. Proof platinum quarters are blessed with some of the lowest mintages among the four platinum denominations. The 2008 Proof Platinum Eagle in particular is the lowest mintage design based quarter once proof issued since the suspension of Matte Proof Indian Half Eagles in 1915.
The series has a consistent Statute of Liberty obverse that gives the set excellent cohesion. This encourages strong key date behavior in modern series just as it does in classic series that are collected by series date and mint mark.
The Mint has parted from its long running policy of limited design change that was in force for most of its 200+ year history and encouraged domestic collectors to focus on series by date and mint mark. Today design variety has expanded dramatically and if the US collector develops the same preference for design variety that foreign collectors have it could create a situation where series without design variety become collected by type thus damaging the value of their key dates. This series has nothing to fear from a design based collecting culture if it comes.

Bullion Items � Non-Returnable, Non-Cancellable, Exchanges Only
The term "bullion items", for purposes of this provision, includes but is not limited to ungraded silver, gold, platinum or palladium legal tender coins; and silver, gold, platinum or palladium bars or rounds; as well as any other item advertised or marketed by Company as a "bullion item", prior to Customer purchase. Purchases of Bullion Items may not be returned or cancelled for any reason, at any time, but in the event of a manufacturer's defect; it may be exchanged for the same item, within the Company's sole discretion, if otherwise available. If the product has been altered, is not in its original coin capsule, or is otherwise in an unsaleable condition, the product will not be accepted for return or exchange. All documents and bonus items included with the product must also be returned. If the product is not returned with all original packaging and bonus items, is incomplete, or is returned after the 30-day return period, the Company reserves the right not to accept the return or to accept the return subject to a 20% restocking fee, in the Company's sole discretion. All returns with a purchase price over 0 must include a Return Authorization Number. Refunds of non-bullion items are for the cost of product only; shipping and handling charges are not refundable, unless otherwise stated by Company.
